Description

These Classic Smash Burgers bring irresistible flavor with simple preparation. Perfect for a quick dinner, this recipe features juicy beef patties, melted cheddar, and your favorite toppings for a delightful homemade meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • pounds ground chuck (80% lean ground beef)
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon ground mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tablespoon vegetable oil, for cooking
  • heaping ¾ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns (lightly toasted, if desired)
  • burger toppings of choice

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the ground beef with black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, ground mustard, and Worcestershire sauce, leaving out the salt for now.
  2. Form the mixture into four large meatballs, each about 4½ oz, then flatten them into 1-inch thick discs. Refrigerate for at least 15 minutes or up to 24 hours.
  3. Heat a 12-inch cast-iron or nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Season the patties with kosher salt.
  4. Add vegetable oil to the pan, then place the burgers one by one, smashing each with a spatula until they're about ¼-inch thick. Let them cook for around 2 minutes until browned and crusty on the bottom.
  5. Flip the burgers, add a slice of cheese on each, and cook for another 2-3 minutes depending on your preferred doneness.
  6. Serve the burgers on buns with your choice of toppings.

Notes

The burgers can be frozen for up to three months. For storage, freeze them on a baking sheet first, then transfer to a sealable bag.
Be sure to refrigerate the formed patties to help retain their shape while cooking.
Feel free to customize your toppings with lettuce, tomatoes, or your favorite sauces.
