Description

This Best Sausage And Apple Stuffing combines savory sausage, sweet apples, and aromatic herbs for a quick and delicious side that elevates any meal. Perfect for festive occasions or cozy family dinners!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 cups diced bread, cut into 1/2"-3/4" pieces
  • 1 cup salted butter
  • 2 cups celery, diced
  • 2 cups onion, diced (white or yellow)
  • 1 pound ground sausage
  • 3 medium apples, cored and chopped into 1/2" pieces
  • 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon parsley, fresh, minced
  • 1 teaspoon thyme, fresh, minced
  • 1 teaspoon sage, fresh, minced
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1½ cups chicken broth

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F.
  2. Cut the bread into 1/2" to 3/4" pieces and lay them in a single layer on baking sheets.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven for about 1 hour, tossing a few times to make sure all sides are dry.
  4. Once dried, remove from the oven and transfer to a large bowl. Set aside while you make the rest of the stuffing.
  5. Increase oven temperature to 350 degrees F.
  6. Put butter in a large pot over medium heat and melt it. Add the celery and onions and cook until tender and translucent—about 8 minutes.
  7. Add the sausage, breaking it up into small chunks, and cook until no longer pink. Then add the diced apples and cook for an additional minute.
  8. Add the poultry seasoning, minced parsley, thyme, sage, salt, pepper, and chicken broth, then stir.
  9. Pour the mixture over the dry bread and gently fold together until moist; add more chicken broth if it seems dry.
  10. Spray a 9" x 13" baking dish with nonstick spray, then spread the mixture evenly in the dish.
  11. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-60 minutes, stirring gently every 15 minutes, or until the top is lightly brown.
  12. Remove from the oven and serve warm.

Notes

Feel free to use different types of bread for varied flavors.
The stuffing can be prepared a day in advance, just reheat before serving.
