This Death By Chocolate Cake is a chocolate lover’s dream, featuring rich layers of delicious chocolate cake, smooth frosting, and a velvety texture that’s perfect for any celebration or just a sweet treat!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour; sifted
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup cocoa powder; sifted
  • 2 ½ tsp. baking powder
  • 1 ½ tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. kosher salt
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 cup sour cream; room temperature
  • ½ cup canola oil
  • 2 large eggs; room temperature
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp. instant coffee crystals
  • 2 tbsp. white vinegar; or distilled vinegar
  • ½ cup warm water
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp. dark baking cocoa powder
  • 2 cups unsalted butter; room temperature
  • 1 cup dark baking cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 5 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp. warm brewed coffee
  • 1 ½ cup chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the wet ingredients including granulated sugar until dissolved.
  3. In another bowl, combine the dry ingredients.
  4. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients with a whisk, blending well after each addition.
  5. Divide the cake batter evenly into baking pans and bake for 35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. While baking, prepare the chocolate syrup by combining all ingredients in a microwave safe bowl and set aside when mixed.
  7. For the frosting, beat the unsalted butter until fluffy; gradually add cocoa powder, then vanilla extract and salt.
  8. Mix in powdered sugar, heavy cream, and coffee, and refrigerate until needed.
  9. Once the cake is cooled, cut it into four layers.
  10. Spread frosting between layers and chill for 5 minutes.
  11. Frost the top and sides, alternating chilling to prevent melting; garnish with chocolate chips before serving.

Notes

Ensure all your ingredients are at room temperature for the best texture.
You can use different types of sugar or cocoa for varied flavors.
For added richness, add a splash of coffee liqueur to the frosting.
