Description

This recipe features caramelized onions that provide an irresistible flavor and aroma, perfect for enhancing sandwiches, dips, and soups. Easy to prepare with yellow onions, butter, and just a touch of brown sugar, these onions take your meals to the next level!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 lbs medium or large yellow onions
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons packed dark brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Cut the onions in half from root to tip, remove the root with a paring knife, and trim the tips.
  2. Slice each onion half lengthwise into ¼-inch thick half moons and place in a large bowl.
  3. In a large pot over medium heat, melt the butter with the olive oil.
  4. Add handfuls of onions to the pot, stirring often until soft and translucent, about 2 minutes per batch.
  5. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cooking the onions while stirring occasionally for about 45-50 minutes, until they are deeply caramelized and dark brown.
  6. Season with brown sugar and salt, stirring for another 5-7 minutes until well mixed, then remove from heat and let cool.
  7. Store the cooled onions in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week.

Notes

Make sure to use a wide pot to promote even cooking of the onions.
Stir the onions regularly to prevent them from burning as they caramelize.
These onions can be used in a variety of dishes—from sandwiches to dips.
